It is my pleasure to announce that Bessie award-winning artist Kimberly Bartosik, guest artist in Dance, has been awarded two prestigious fellowships. Kimberly has been named both a 2019 Guggenheim Fellow and a Virginia B. Toulmin Women Leaders in Dance Fellow from the Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU, founded by Jennifer Homans.
We are thrilled for Kimberly and so very excited to see her work Ecsteriority4 (Part 2) performed by our BFA majors on DancePlus Spring 2019.

Dance Auditions – Monday, April 15th

ATTENTION BFA Dance Students: On Monday, April 15th we will be hosting  auditions for the BFA and MFA dance programs. These students will be auditioning in Studio 110 with Chien-ying’s Technique A class. Please adhere to the professional reminders described below.

  1. Please leave all belongings (bags, coats, etc) in the locker rooms
  2. Please be on time for class
  3. Please remember our dress code
  4. Please use professional language and demonstrate a level of professional behavior in the locker rooms, studios, and hallways.

Arts Day – Thursday, April 18th

ATTENTION BFA Dance Students: We will be hosting prospective students and their parents for Dance Arts Day on Thursday, 04/18 and they will be observing Ballet and Technique class. We’re excited to show off our department!

Traffic Advisory: Admitted Student Open House

Rutgers University will be holding its Admitted Student Open House and Spring Football Game on Saturday, April 13, 2019, and the Rutgers Unite Half Marathon and New Brunswick Ciclovia will take place on Sunday, April 14, 2019.  As a result, the following temporary traffic closures & detours will be in place:

Seminary Place will be closed to all vehicular traffic starting on Saturday, April 13, at 8:00am thru Sunday, April 14, 2019, at 4:30pm.

For Saturday, April 13, 2019:

-All campuses will experience increased traffic from 7:30am thru 2:00pm.

-Sutphen Road and Scarlet Knight Way will be closed from 12:00pm thru 6:00pm.

For Sunday, April 14, 2019:

-College Avenue will be closed to all vehicular traffic starting around 6:30am.

-Local roadways will be subject to closures for short periods of time on the Busch, Livingston, and College Ave. Campuses beginning at 7:30AM.

The Livingston Campus can be accessed via: River Road to Cedar Lane to Road 2 to Suttons Lane to Road 3. Parking will be in Lot 105. This access route will be used until approximately 10:30AM when the roads on the Livingston campus are scheduled to re-open.

The Busch Campus can be accessed via: Hoes Lane West to Frelinghuysen Road to Allison Road. Parking will be in the lots located on Taylor Road and beyond. This access route will be used until approximately 11:00AM when the roads on the Busch campus are scheduled to be open.

-George St. will be closed between Paterson St. and Church St. between 10:00am and 4:00pm

All motorists are advised to use caution in the aforementioned areas and expect delays.

Fall 2019 Pre-Registration Has Begun—Undergraduate Students

Registration for the Fall 2019 term has begun for Rutgers–New Brunswick undergraduate students and continues through Friday, April 19. Registration is by degree credits already earned. The last day to withdraw from the university for spring 2019 is April 22. Please email studenthelp@registrar.edu for additional information, or learn more here.

Rutgers Day – Saturday, April 27th 

Rutgers Day, the university’s annual welcome and show-and-tell for New Jersey residents of all ages, will take place Saturday, April 27, rain or shine.
The event offers more than 600 free programs featuring hands on demonstrations, interactive activities, and student performances, including cultural dances, live bands and martial arts demonstrations

College Avenue: At 10:30 a.m., cheer on hundreds of alumni, Rutgers Marching Scarlet Knights, Rutgers cheerleaders, graduating seniors, and the Scarlet Knight mascot as they march down College Avenue for the Rutgers Day and All-Alumni Parade.

Come see the newly dedicated Paul Robeson Plaza and visit the Paul Robeson 100 tent to learn about this famous alumnus and his remarkable life as a scholar, athlete, actor, singer and global activist and the rich legacy he left the university and the world.

Visit the Global Pavilion and World of Languages, share your story with the Oral History Archives and enter the Tent of Big Ideas. Visit the “R” Garden, grab a free cupcake and take a turn at the all-day, marathon reading of William Goldman’s “The Princess Bride.”

Busch: Tour two of the university’s new state-of-the-art facilities – the Richard Weeks Hall of Engineering and the Chemistry and Chemical Biology buildings. Transport yourself to a new world with virtual reality streaming, watch drones take flight, test your surgical skills, visit the stuffed animal health clinic, and practice your elevator pitch “Shark Tank” style.

Cook/Douglass: Watch horses run on a high-speed treadmill, follow the life cycle of a tree from seed to saw, and take a tour of a research greenhouse.  Learn about 50 years of nutrition education in New Jersey with cooking and nutrition demos from each of the past five decades. Get up close and personal with your lower intestines on a walk through a giant inflatable colon. Stop by the New Jersey Folk Festival – one of only a handful of folk festivals in the United States managed by undergraduate students – which turns 45 this

Apply to be a Student Residence Coordinator

The Rutgers University Inn and Conference Center is currently accepting applications for student Residence Coordinator (RC) positions. RCs provide front desk coverage on a rotating basis and support services to overnight guests, conference attendees, and meeting organizers. Compensation includes free housing and a stipend. University Diploma Application

Undergraduate students who anticipate completing May 2019 degree requirements must apply for graduation by submitting a diploma application online. Please contact the Undergraduate Registrar’s Office at 848-445-2757 and ask for Monica Licourt or Michael Rusen, or email diplomas@registrar.rutgers.edu with any concerns about a diploma application. Please note that completion of a diploma application does not imply that graduation requirements have been met.

University Commencement Parking Hangtag

University Commencement will take place on Sunday, May 19, 2019, at HighPoint.com Stadium on the Busch Campus. With more than 50,000 people expected on campuses in Piscataway and New Brunswick, parking on campus will be limited. Therefore, graduating students must register to receive up to two free parking hangtags for themselves and their families or guests. Registration for special-needs parking hangtags and for non-special-needs tags is now open. Learn more here.

Commencement Speakers

Super Bowl champions and Rutgers alumni Jason McCourty and Devin McCourty of the New England Patriots will deliver the 253rd commencement address to Rutgers-New Brunswick and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences graduates on May 19. They will also receive honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees in recognition of their commitment to community service and philanthropy.

Summer 2019 Opportunities

Shen Wei Dance Arts 2019 Summer Intensive

Shen Wei Dance Arts is excited to announce our 2019 Summer Intensive, which will take place June 17th-22nd​, in New York City at the Center at West Park historic landmark building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

This six​-day workshop will be jam-packed, offering in-depth technique and repertory classes pertaining to Shen Wei’s choreography and Natural Body Development Technique, as well as workshops in improvisation/invention, performance concepts/qualities, partnering, site-specific explorations, and yoga/body work. Unlike many intensives, we keep the numbers low in order to offer students a more personal experience. Classes run from 10am to 6pm Monday through Friday, with a shorter Saturday am final session​. Optional activities are scheduled almost ​every evening!

American Ballet Theatre

American Ballet Theatre is now looking for passionate college Dance or Dance Education majors to work as day/residential counselors in our New York and California Summer Intensive Sites!

Counselors needed for our 5-week New York program will be day counselors only, with responsibilities Monday – Friday (possibly one Saturday commitment) 8:30am to 5:30pm daily and compensated with a $200 per week stipend and the opportunity to take class.

Counselors in our 3-week California program will be residential counselors, living in the dorms with the students and accompanying them on weekend activities with staff members. These counselors are compensated with provided room/board, meal cards, one stipend of $1200, and the opportunity to take classes.

Miranda from Spain, who is a sensational contemporary teacher and we are bringing back Ben Mehl, an actor and teacher (NYU MFA grad and professor) who made a huge impact on our participants this winter. And of course, VIM’s company members will be sharing classes and workshops dedicated to contemporary movement, partnering, improvisation, and dance theater methodology.

BFA, MFA, EdM, BFA, BA majors and Dance Minors are invited to sign up for free Pilates Reformer small group sessions in the Dance Department Soma Center.  Students can sign up for a once-a-week, hour-long session.  Sessions are available Wednesdays 4-7 pm and Thursdays 3-5 pm, and begin on Wednesday, March 27th.  The sign-up sheet for the second half of Spring semester is posted outside the Soma Center, and sign-up is on a first-come basis.  Reformer classes are a wonderful opportunity to supplement your dance training, so please take advantage of this opportunity if your schedule permits.

Úumbal is an exercise in meeting, recognizing, and celebrating a community gathered for the joy of movement, exploring new ways of moving through public space. Úumbal is developed of, by, and for Philadelphia residents with lead artist Mariana Arteaga to create a choreography that is representative of a collective. The project consists of three stages, culminating with Úumbal participants dancing the choreography through the streets of Philadelphia. The Step Library is the first of three stages of Úumbal’s development, where the foundation of Úumbal’s ultimate choreography is collected.
