“Flamenco is synonymous with Spanish culture. Yet, since its inception, theorists have sidelined the fundamental contribution of Afro-Andalusians to this art form.”
Gurumbé: Afro-Andalusian Memories, a feature-length documentary from anthropologist Miguel Ángel Rosales, explores the contribution of Afro-Andalusians to flamenco as the art form developed. Gurumbé (72 min, in Spanish with English subtitles) has won numerous awards in the festival circuit and it is currently premiering around the world.
Join us for this special event in La Nacional’s beautiful, intimate performance space. There will be a screening of the film with the director, and a flamenco performance by dancer Yinka Ese Graves, who is featured in the film, with live musicians. There will also be a round table discussion with the performers and the director, moderated by K. Meira Goldberg. In addition to organizing numerous conferences and flamenco events with the Foundation for Iberian Music, Goldberg is the author of Flamenco on the Global Stage and Sonidos Negros: On the Blackness of Flamenco (forthcoming, Oxford Univ. Press).

Composition/Physical Relationships

Through a series of improvisations and choreographic sketches, we will explore making dances as the process of creating a series of physical relations. The experiments will include the cultivation of bodily states through the use of imagery, partner work, and structuring physical problems, which in turn affect our bodily state. The limitation will be examined as an integral part of composition. Through this, we will seek to develop work, which exhibits a personal and evocative language, contemporary cultural and social relevance, intelligence (in its various forms), and guts.

Deconstructing Perceptions

Sessions will work with approaches to undercutting the ‘blink’ that forces us to judge each other at first sight. Some questions: How can we engage choreographic structures that resist determining who we think others are? Can we expand the notion (offer more context or framing) of the ‘blink’, the ‘gaze’, ‘perception’ of self in relation to others? Come ready to read, perceive, observe and witness.

This Body is Hallowed Ground

For this workshop, we’ll be exploring witchcraft and earth-based rituals as somatic practices of integration, acceptance, and healing. Students will be given new tools to recognize and hone their bodily intuition. We’ll tap into the visceral effects of astrology and engage in a holistic movement practice that aligns with planetary energies. We’ll explore altar-building, herbal medicine, Tarot, visioning, touch, improvisation and ancestor reverence as avenues toward embodied spiritual awareness.

An Eco-Poetic Approach to Dance Improvisation and Performance

In this workshop, we will examine the delicate relationships between perception, action and the poetic imagination through improvised dance making. We will begin with the assumption that dancing and performing are shaped not only by physical and compositional skill but by our capacities to be in resonance with others and the nested worlds we live in. Drawing on scores, ideas, and themes from their work The Way You Look (at me) Tonight — developed in collaboration with philosopher of perception Alva Noë — Curtis and Cunningham lead an investigation through movement, language, writing, watching, listening and feeling, of how difference — of physicality or lived experience — can shape, and is shaped by, the way we ‘perform’ our perceptions. This workshop is accessible to people of diverse physicalities.

Embodied Rebellion (becoming uncivilized)

This workshop draws on achugar’s own practice developed through years of making performances as a tool for liberating ourselves from presupposed ways of being in our bodies and allowing a more liberated and utopian future self to emerge. Via this practice, we investigate ways of uncovering what’s already present (but perhaps repressed or suppressed/oppressed) in ourselves, and how to create the conditions to let it manifest and appear on its own. A practice of growing a new body; a connected body; an anarchic body; a utopian body… by becoming uncivilized with a practice of being in pleasure.

Alexander Technique: A Critical Practice

The Alexander Technique is a means of identifying mental and physical habits that interfere with one’s ability to attend to the moment and make choices. Often when we strive to carry out our intentions, we use a process that is habitual, unconscious, and counterproductive. This technique offers a practice of staying open and alert in the moment, observing our familiar tensions and choosing to move without them.

This workshop unpacks the problems of nationalism and inclusion through the practice of making performance. We will use meaning making to interrogate the ordinary as an unknown fantasy. Confronting the concept of home and the inevitability of being lost, autonomy stands in as a desire for togetherness, not a recipe.

Students can sign up for a once-a-week, hour-long session. Sessions are available Tuesdays 1-4pm and Wednesdays 4-7pm, and begin on Tuesday, October 31st. The sign-up sheet for the second half of Fall semester is posted outside the Soma Center, and sign-up is on a first-come basis.
Reformer classes are a wonderful opportunity to supplement your dance training by increasing body awareness and core stability; improving posture and flexibility; and preventing injuries. It’s also an opportunity to deepen your Pilates practice if you’re considering doing the Polestar Pilates Teacher Training. So please take advantage of this opportunity if your schedule permits.
