Workshop Series: LMA/LOD for Dance & Movement Educators

Dear Laban Friends,

Happy New Year!  Our special programming begins the new year with the third workshop of our workshop series for dance and movement educators: Effort/Dynamics: Exploring Movement Vitality through LMA and LOD.  The workshop is scheduled for February 16 and 17th from 10 – 4pm.  Each of the four workshop can be taken individually so don’t worry if you missed the first two.  We plan to run the series again.  Below is a full description of our workshop series.  Please e-mail , call 212-643-8888, or download & fax attached to register.

Workshop Series:  LMA/LOD for Dance & Movement Educators

This series of four workshops is designed specifically with the dance and movement educator in mind.  Basic components of Laban Movement Analysis and Language of Dance will be explored, along with corresponding Motif Notation, in an experiential and integrated format. Participants will actively explore concepts individually and collaboratively and will also consider applications in practice.  A workshop packet will be provided for each workshop including theory concepts, Motif, ideas for application and additional resources.

Target Population: Movement teachers, dance educators and reflective movement practitioners.  Prior experience of LMA/LOD helpful but not required.

Workshop Series of Four*

Exploring Movement Vitality through LMA and LOD

In this workshop, we will explore LMA Effort Factors (Weight, Space, Time and Flow), Action Drive and Effort Phrasing.  Aspects of LOD Dynamics will include the concept of Par, Force, Gravity, Accents, Emphasized/Unemphasized.

Dates: Saturday & Sunday; February 16-17, 2013
Times: 10 – 4 pm (1 hour lunch)

Location: Studios at 520 Eighth Avenue, New York NY 10018

Shape: Exploring Shape through LMA and LOD

In this workshop, we will explore LMA concepts of Inner Shaping, Shape Qualities, Basic Shape Forms, Directional Shaping, Carving/Molding and basic elements of the LOD Progression of Relating.

Body: Exploring Body Basics through LMA and LOD

In this workshop, we will explore the LOD Movement Alphabet, parts of the body, and movement concepts from Bartenieff Fundamentals.

Times: 10 – 4 pm (1 hour lunch)

Space: Exploring our Movement Landscape through LMA and LOD

In this workshop, we will explore Personal Space including Levels; One-, Two- and Three-Dimensional Directions; and Pathways in the Personal Space (Central, Peripheral, Transverse).  Additionally General Space will be investigated to explore Constant Directions, Traveling Pathways, and Areas of the Room.

Learning Outcomes:  Practical understanding of LMA/LOD movement concepts that you can immediately begin to use in your teaching and share with your students.

Workshop Costs: $325/per workshop  (LIMS® Members, LOD Members and DEL Students get $25 off per workshop).

Tina Curran, Ph.D, MFA is a life-long student and evolving practitioner of Laban Studies including Labanotation (Directing from Score), Language of Dance® (LOD Certification Specialist) and Laban Movement Analysis.  She is an Assistant Professor at The University of Texas at Austin in the Department of Theater and Dance where she is co-developing a BFA in dance education learning to teacher certification.  Tina also serves on the faculty of the Dance Education Laboratory at the 92nd Street Y – Harkness Dance Center where she collaborates to design and implement pedagogy and professional development courses for pre-service and in-service dance educators in K-12, higher education, community, and cultural organizations. She is a consultant to the New York City Department of Education Project Arts Office, where she first participated in the writing of the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Dance PreK-12 and subsequently collaborated in the design and facilitation of professional development workshops for NYC dance educators.

Frederick Curry, MA, CMA, is the undergraduate director of Dance at Mason Gross School of Arts at Rutgers University where his focus is on technique and pedagogy and LMA.  He has trained in the U.S. and U.K. Laban traditions and has taught in the LIMS Yearlong Program in New York and the Modular Programs in New York and Belgium.  He serves on the Board of Directors of the National Dance Education Organization and is on the faculty at the Dance Education Laboratory at the 92nd Street Y. He is a middle school/high school proctor/adjudicator for the NYCDOE Arts Achieve dance performance assessments—a multi-year study funded by a USDOE Investing in Innovation (i3) grant.  He has taught in youth dance programs in England, Switzerland, Connecticut and North Dakota and was a 2006 U.S. State Department Cultural Envoy to Uganda.
